OneDrive External App for Faculty & Staff

The Microsoft OneDrive External App integrates with Canvas to seamlessly add Office 365 applications to your courses.

Microsoft OneDrive External App allows you to:

Attach Office 365 files including Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, and Excel from the Rich Content Editor

Distribute Office 365 cloud assignments

View and organize your Microsoft Office files

Create collaborations where course members can work together on shared documents in real time

Integrate Office 365 files with your course modules


Instructions

  • Files stored in OneDrive can be viewed through the Microsoft OneDrive link in the Course Navigation. Instructors can add new folders, upload files, sort files and folders, and edit documents directly in OneDrive directly within Canvas. Files in Microsoft OneDrive are considered your personal files and are only visible to you unless they are shared through other methods such as linked documents in an announcement, module, or assignment.

    1. Open a Course, click Settings, then click Navigation.

    2. Next to the desired external app, click the three vertical dots to display more options. Click Enable.

    3. Click Save.

    4. Click Microsoft OneDrive in your course navigation. You will now be able to open a file and edit the document directly in your browser as desired.

  • Cloud assignments are templated assignments. All students get edit their own copy of the assignment, submit the assignment, their own copy gets submitted and is available to the educator in the speed grader for assessment.

    Microsoft OneDrive allows you to use Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to provide assignment instructions to students or assignment templates for students to edit and submit.

    Add an Office File

    1. Select the plug icon in the Rich Content Editor and click Microsoft OneDrive.

      NOTE: On your first try, Microsoft OneDrive may not show up. In that case, you can choose View All and select Microsoft OneDrive from the pop-up.

    2. Select a file from the OneDrive file picker to embed or link the file.

      NOTE: Files with .xls extensions cannot be embedded.
       
    3. Select External Tool as the Submission Type. Click Find. A pop-up will open.

    4. Click Microsoft OneDrive to open the OneDrive file picker. Select the file you want to serve as the templated assignment and click Attach.

    5. Click or tap Select to confirm the selected file.
    6. Select your options for Submission Attempts and Assign. Click either Save or Save & Publish.

      IMPORTANT: After a Microsoft OneDrive cloud assignment has been published, it should not be edited. If you edit it, a new document will be created and shared with students. If the students have attempted the previous assignment and you share a new assignment, all student work that was submitted previously will be lost.
    1. Select the plug icon in the Rich Content Editor and click Microsoft OneDrive.

    2. Select the file you want to use, then click Embed.

      Your file will be embedded in the Rich Content Editor box.

  • CAUTION: When files are linked in the Rich Content Editor, the link displays the exact name of the file. Please ensure your file names are correct before linking a file.

    1. Select the plug icon in the Rich Content Editor and click Microsoft OneDrive.

    2. Select the file you want to use, then click Link.

      Your file will be linked in the Rich Content Editor box.

    1. Open Microsoft OneDrive from your Course Navigation Menu.

    2. An external window will pop up. Log in using your TXST email and password.
