How to Take Attendance in Top Hat
When to use Top Hat Attendance over Canvas Attendance
- If a professor is only using Top Hat every so often, or if they're planning ONLY to use it for attendance, they should use the Canvas tool for consistency.
- Remind the instructor that the Canvas attendance tool shows both a code and a QR code on screen for students to check in.
- If a professor is using Top Hat for every lecture, every day, it's appropriate to use the Top Hat attendance tool.
Initiating Attendance Before or During Your Slide Presentation
NOTE: Geolocation is turned OFF in Top Hat
Most professors choose to begin each of their lectures by taking attendance. If they are consistently using Top Hat to present, they can take attendance with Top Hat.
1. To do this, click on the first slide you'd like to present to select it and display it in your preview pane. When you're ready to present to your students, click on the blue present button in the upper right hand corner.
2. This will reveal for you the presentation launch page where you can decide if you'd like to Start Presentation, Take Attendance or Cancel Presentation. Click Take Attendance to project the 4-digit attendance code.
3. You can see the number of students that have submitted the attendance code over the number of students that are enrolled.
4. The Finish button in the lower right-hand corner of the window to prevent students from further submitting the attendance code in the course towards the bottom right-hand side of the window.
5. Attendance sessions auto-close after 4 hours.

Initiating Attendance at Any Time
You can also take attendance on the fly without initiating a slide presentation if you'd like. To do so, click on the blue Create button as you would to create Top Hat content such as questions and discussions, and select Take Attendance.
When you are happy with the attendance figure for the lecture, you can click on the Finish button in the lower right-hand corner of the window to prevent students from further submitting the attendance code.
