Zoom Telehealth (HIPAA Compliant)

Zoom Telehealth (in accordance of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA) allows medical professionals and authorized healthcare partners to meet with patients and other members of the healthcare industry using screen-share health records.

Easily connect physicians, patients, and specialists for regular or urgent care appointments and share imaging and test results with all participants. Medical professionals can also provide virtual behavioral and mental health visits in one-on-one or group sessions.

Zoom Telehealth Features

  • Zoom Telehealth is available to Faculty and Staff whose job requires them to remotely discuss HIPAA-related topics to others.
  • Zoom Telehealth is HIPAA Compliant
  • Ensures the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all electronic protected health information the healthcare provider creates, receives, maintains, or transmits.
  • Zoom Telehealth does not distribute actual patient data or records.

NOTE: As with any form of electronic communication, certain risks are inherent with the use of telepractice. Potential risks to telepractice services include interruptions, unauthorized access, and technical difficulties.

CAUTION: A Business Associate Agreement (BAA), is required as part of HIPAA compliance. Texas State University has signed a BAA with Zoom to cover the following healthcare users:

  • Speech Language Hearing Clinic (COHP)
  • Student Health Center (SA)
  • Physical Therapy Clinic (COHP)
  • Assessment & Counseling Clinics (COE)
  • RRC Counseling Practicum Clinic (COE)
  • CARES – The Clinic for Autism Research, Evaluation and Support (COE)
  • Texas State Sleep Center (COHP)
  • Texas State University Counseling Center (VPSA)

The areas listed above are the only identified university healthcare users that should be dealing with HIPAA data. Other faculty and staff can use Zoom Telehealth, but they are not covered under the BAA

CAUTION: It is still possible for HIPAA Rules to be violated using Zoom Telehealth, so users must be aware of their responsibilities with respect to patient privacy, and only share or communicate Protected Health Information (PHI) with individuals authorized to receive the information. It is the responsibility of the covered entity to ensure Zoom Telehealth is used correctly and HIPAA rules are always followed.
